JOB SUMMARY:

This is a skill level position in the petroleum industry. The position has a multitude of responsibilities above the drilling floor.  Must be able to maintain drilling fluid integrity and adjust chemicals according to drilling program needs.  Follows established equipment preventative maintenance program to ensure equipment readiness and safe operating procedures.

 

This position is expected to support the Winter Exploration 2025–2026 season, with an anticipated start date of October 2025 and an end date in April 2026.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • The Derrickman works off the racking platform in the derrick during the tripping of drill pipe and collars.  They may be latching or unlatching elevators from pipe, racking or unracking sequentially in the fingers.
  • Conditions the drilling fluid and maintains mud pumps (i.e., tests for weight and viscosity), adds chemicals to drilling mud following specific mud engineer or driller’s directive.
  • Ensures preventive maintenance is performed on all equipment above the rig floor and equipment associated with the drilling fluid system.
  • Inspects to see that all equipment including degasser in mud tanks is installed properly and greased as required.  Performs preventive maintenance on mixing hopper, desanders, desilter, high- and low-pressure hoses, and related drilling fluids equipment.
  • During casing operations Derrickman may be required to work in derrick on stabbing board or work the catwalk.
  • Ensures the proper set up and installation of the escape buggy system.  This includes the proper maintenance and inspection of the buggy, the escape line and the securing pin.
  • Relief Driller.
  • Pit watcher, if not separately staffed.
  • Performs any other duties that may be assigned.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Conducts his job duties in compliance with Nordic HSET/HSE policies.
  • Works toward achieving Nordic’s annual HSET goals.
  • Assists Rig Management in identifying operational non-conformances at the rigsite.
  • Reports any spills on pad to Rig Manager’s office immediately– including oil, water, glycol, drilling mud, dry mud products, etc.
  • Notifies Rig Manager of any environmental non-compliances immediately.
  • Reports any property or environmental damage by third-party vendors to Rig Manager’s office immediately.
  • Encourages rig personnel to report any unsafe work conditions or practices and any environmental non-compliances immediately to supervisors.
  • Assists in development and implementation of standard operating procedures.
  • Keeps timely and accurate motor reports, noting any spills or releases.
  • Assists in maintaining waste management tracking system and hazardous waste determinations.
  • Assists in completing daily spill champion activities log.
  • Assists in any internal audits as necessary.
  • Assists Driller in daily rig site duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to obtain or currently hold North Slope Training Cooperative card.
  • Must have a minimum of one year’s experience on a diesel electric rotary drilling rig.
  • Must be able to operate hopper ad viscosity testing equipment.
  • Must possess a current Well Control Certificate at the Drilling Supervisor level.
  • Must be functionally literate, able to read, write, and perform basic math.
  • Familiarity with oilfield-related equipment and procedures preferred.
